Jim Sheridan, a winner of a special Golden Angel of Tofifest and a director of worldwide fame, is about to start working on two television series and a feature film. The actors to be featured in his new productions include such hot names, as Rooney Mara, or Jeremy Irons himself.
The first of the TV series will be based on one of the less popular films by Jim Sheridan, i.e. “In America” from 2002. The film was screened during Jim Sheridan’s last visit in Torun and it discusses the issue of illegal immigration in the USA. Jim is a warm-hearted and open man, but also a flesh and blood film director and we keep magnificent memories of his visit in Torun. The priority in his artistic work has always been the problems of people unjustly wronged. The director refused to disclose, whether the series would be produced by HBO, as the “well-informed” claim.
It could be HBO, but I don't want to say for definite before we sign the deal, Sheridan told the Irish Independent. I want to tell the story of illegal aliens; the people on the edges of American society. It will focus on the Irish community in the States, he explained.
Jim Sheridan is simultaneously working on a second TV series. He has just completed an adaptation of “The Ten Commandments” for the two Hollywood titans – producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Sheridan underlines that TV series have nowadays become a truly creative sphere for filmmakers. According to the opinion of the Irish director, they offer greater freedom and a chance to show more, than a regular feature film.
Despite the declaration, Jim Sheridan has also become involved in a new feature project. He is going to helm a film based on an award-winning novel “The Secret Scripture” by Sebastian Barry. It is a mysterious story of Roseanne McNulty, a 100 years-old resident in a centre for mentally ill, and the diary she kept, in which she revealed the true reasons behind her imprisonment in the institution. The first decisions concerning cast have already been made public. The young Roseanne will be player by Rooney Mara (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”). Until recently, it was believed that the character would be portrayed by Jessica Chastain, as she closely resembles Vanessa Redgrave, who is to play the 100 year-old Roseanne, but things took a different path. Both ladies will be accompanied by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jack Reynor, and Jeremy Irons himself. The film will be another opportunity for Jim Sheridan to work with Noel Pearson, producer of “My Left Foot”, Sheridan’s debut, nominated for Academy Awards. One should definitely expect something exciting to come out of this. Shooting is scheduled to start this September, in Ireland.
