When the Irish writer Bram Stoker came up with the idea for ‘Dracula’, it would have not occurred to anybody that he was to create a character that would later become an icon of pop culture, reproduced countless times.
The story blending fantasy, horror and romance was later on reinterpreted in virtually all forms of art: not only in dozens of films, but also in musicals, theatre plays, and a multitude of literary forms. Filmmakers have been infatuated with title Count Dracula for many long years. This year, this vampire is going to make an appearance in Torun. We are happy to announce that the brilliant acting creation of Gary Oldman and the vision of Dracula burdened with the everlasting feeling of unfulfilled love that Francis Ford Coppola gave to us are the leading theme of the 22nd edition of the Tofifest International Film Festival. Kujawy Pomorze Region!
Many renowned film directors, such as Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Tod Browning, Werner Herzog, and many others, were inspired by this mythical, predatory, but at the same time attractive vampire character. Nonetheless, it was the ‘Dracula’ by Francis Ford Coppola from 1992, with the absolutely remarkable Gary Oldman in the leading role and the soundtrack composed by Wojciech Kilar, that film enthusiasts came to love the most. The film received three Academy Awards, namely for Best Makeup, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Effects Editing. What Francis Ford Coppola did differently was to show the vampire with a human trait, combining a cruel monster and a villain with a being filled with eternal and unhappy love. This trick helped him transform the fearsome predator into a tragic figure with whom the audience can identify on many different levels.
The film by Francis Ford Coppola is a living proof that you can talk about love in many different ways, not just in comedy or comedy of manners, but also through a fairy tale or drama. Filmmakers have an entire array of possibilities offered by various film genres. This is exactly the reason why this year’s edition of the Tofifest International Film Festival. Kujawy Pomorze Region is dedicated to Everlasting Love - the love that lasts for ever and conquers time - but we are going take a perverse approach to it. Through the Gary Oldman’s lens, our audience will admire a world populated by mythical beings and passionate emotions. I truly hope that our audience will come to love this peculiar take on this kind of cinema. It goes without saying that the film by Francis Ford Coppola will be shown on a big screen, during the festival, says Kafka Jaworska, director of the Tofifest IFF.
