He is an outstanding film and theatre actor, music composer, lyricist, and a truly versatile artist. His is widely recognised not only for the great many theatre and film roles that he played, but also as a voice behind many cult animated characters. It is our distinct privilege to present this year’s winner of the Golden Angel Award for Artistic Insolence - Zbigniew Zamachowski.
Among the winners of our award, this year we also have Zbigniew Zamachowski, who artistic path is an encyclopaedia in itself and a guide of sorts into the history of Polish cinema. The characters he chooses to play are always bold, uncompromising, and out of the ordinary. His are the absolute heights of the acting artistry, and we have had the privilege to admire it for so many years. The path of each film student is always marked by film directors and film genres, but also by acting talents. Zbigniew Zamachowski is definitely among the group of those actors, who will show you the true arcana of the film art, says Kafka Jaworska, director of the Tofifest IFF. Kujawy Pomorze Region.
Zbigniew Zamachowski is a graduate of the Directing Department at the Leon Schiller National Film School in Łódź (he finished in 1985). He made his début in the film ‘Wielka majówka / The Big Picnic’ directed by Krzysztof Rogulski (1981), where gave a superb performance as the main protagonist Rysiek. That paved the way to further successes and cooperation with many outstanding Polish film directors. Let us quote a few titles of films and the directors he worked with: ‘Dekalog X / Ten Commandments 10’ and ‘Trzy Kolory: Biały / Three Colours: White’ by Krzysztof Kieślowski, ‘Ucieczka z kina Wolność / Escape from the 'Liberty' Cinema’ by Wojciech Marczewski, ‘Zmruż oczy / Squint Your Eyes’ by Andrzej Jakimowski, ‘Cześć, Tereska / Hi, Tessa’ by Robert Gliński, or ‘Pianista / The Pianist’ by Roman Polański. In more recent years, you could admire his talent in a number of films made by young film directors, for example in ‘Sweat’ by Magnus von Horn, in ‘Noc w przedszkolu / A Night at the Kindergarten’ by Rafał Skalski, or in ‘Tarapaty / Double Trouble’ by Marta Karwowska.
Zbigniew Zamachowski has received numerous awards and honorary mentions, such as the Stanisław Wyspiański Award of 1st degree for acting achievements in theatre, film, and stage (in 1989). In 1990, he received the Zbyszek Cybulski Award. He received two awards for a leading male character at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia: in 1994, for the role of Tomasz Siwek in the film ‘Zawrócony / Reverted’ by Kazimierz Kutz, and in 2006, for the role of Marian in ‘Przybyli ułani / Came the Uhlans...’ by Sylwester Chęciński. In 2002, he received the Eagle Polish Film Award for the role of Edzio in ‘Cześć, Tereska / Hi, Tessa’ by Robert Gliński. Two years later, he got the very same award for the role of Jasiek in the film ‘Zmruż oczy / Squint Your Eyes’ by Andrzej Jakimowski. The actor was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (in 2015), and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (in 2017).
