The hero in this film is Antoine Doinel, the director’s alter ego. When Antoine is fired from the army, he focuses on finding the love of his life, cellist Christine Darbon, to who he has been writing all the time during his time in service. Unfortunately, the girl is on vacation skiing with her friends. When she returns, she visits Antoine in the hotel where he works as a receptionist. It may seem that this boy will soon settle down in life. It is quite the contrary, as he soon loses his job and the same happens with all successive positions. He has a problem with fitting in. Upon being hired as a warehouseman in a shoe shop, he catches the fancy of his employer's attractive wife.
