Main Street is a story about the hopeless existence in the Spanish countryside dominated by absurd, old-fashioned proprieties. The image of a city in this picture by Juan Antonio Bardem is composed of the ringing of cathedral’s bells, everyday stroll of clerical students in the park, and a promenade on the main street. The local gilded youth is so bored that they indulge themselves in playing pranks of poor quality, such as sending a coffin to a person sick with the flu. However, there comes an opportunity to play a prank of an entirely different sort. There is a law saying that young people, both men and women, cannot meet in public, in order to avoid being immediately labelled as “the betrothed”. Juan decides to seize the opportunity and starts paying court to Isabel, 35, who is still a maiden...
