Rosa Maria is a history teacher at the University of Lisbon. One day, she and her daughter Maria Joana, 8, go on a cruise from Lisbon to Mumbai, where they will meet their husband and father, who is a pilot of passenger planes. Rosa Maria seizes the opportunity to visit the places that have played the most significant role in the development of Western Civilisation — the places she has been telling her students about but which she has never seen with her own eyes. While presenting Ceuta, Marseille, Naples, Athens, Cairo, or Istanbul, to her daughter, she also crafts stories in which historical facts mix with myths.
