It is a romantic story about the troubled heart of a young woman. Lucy Honeychurch, a girl from a good family, is travelling to Italy, for the first time in her life. She is accompanied by Charlotte, her elder cousin. In the course of events that follow, Lucy transforms from a young and inexperienced girl, into a fully matured woman, who is aware of her feelings. Everything changes, when she and handsome George witness a crime. The girl falls in love with the man. The vigilant Charlotte does not approve of the company of the young man and decides to take her younger cousin back to England. Having returned, Lucy is forced by her mother and brother to accept the proposal of Cecil, who is a young and well-mannered man. It would seem that it should make Lucy happy, but she is far from that. The situation goes from bad to worse, when George and his father move to live in the girl's neighbourhood. That moment Lucy realises what she really feels for George...
