Wallachia, 1835. Two riders are travelling through a barren landscape. They are the local police officer Constandin and his son. One of them has a ready aphorism for every occasion, while the other has a somewhat more contemplative attitude towards the world around him. They are looking for a “Gypsy slave” on the run, who has run away from a certain nobleman, as he had been accused of stealing from him. During that trip, people of many different nationalities and beliefs will meet: Turks and Russians, Romanians and Hungarians, Christians and Jews. All of them hang on to their prejudices and superstitions, passed down from generation to generation. And even finding that man on the run will not be the end of this adventure...
