The Second World War is over. Grace with her two children are living in a beautiful Victorian mansion. Both the boy and the girl suffer from a rare disease ― photophobia, which produces abnormal intolerance to visual perception of light. Living in the dreary house requires following ruthless rules: it must be plunged in dim light at all times, and no other door can be opened, if all others have not been closed before. All of a sudden, strange things start to happen. Why did the servants leave the house under suspicious circumstances? Why did the daughter talk about strange people wandering around the house? And why does Grace have an impression that the things her daughter talked about were not only her fantasies?
