We are in Korea, in 1930s. A crook from the lower classes decides to use deceit to arouse the passion of a beautiful Japanese woman, an heiress to a large fortune, in order to seize that fortune. To that end, he installs the title handmaiden in the closest circle of the heiress — the handmaiden is a gold-digger, totally dependent on the crook, and her task is to win the favours of the millionaire, and become her confidante. The Handmaiden is a story about a love triangle, lust, sexual fantasies, and sophisticated revenge. The scheme is presented from different perspectives and changes dramatically by the minute, on its way to a perverse finale.
