Tom Sherbourne is a war hero, who takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on a desert island, near the coast of Australia. He is soon joined by Isabel, his beloved wife. Both are very much in love with each other and live a happy life to the rhythm of hide tides and low tides of the ocean. Having a child is their greatest and never fulfilled dream. After months of futile efforts, two miscarriages, Isabel starts to feel depressed, which is further deepened by the growing sense of detachment. And then a miracle happens: a small boat pulls in to the shore and Tom discovers that it carried a dead man and a baby that is still alive...
