“Egzaminy (Exams)”, a play by Julian Potrzebny, inspired by the life of Krzysztof Kieślowski, will be presented in Torun, as part of Tofifest. Then, it will travel all the way from Torun to other countries, including Iran, Indonesia, and Nigeria.
Egzaminy is a small drama presented by two actors and inspired by the biography of Krzysztof Kieślowski. The text makes a reference to the artistic work of that outstanding director and uses quotations from his films and interviews he gave. Director Julian Potrzebny has created an intimate portrait of a man, who discovers powers he has never thought he had, when confronted with his own limitations and doubts. Julian Potrzebny is straightforward in his declaration that it was Krzysztof Kieślowski that inspired him to take entrance exams to the Lodz Film School. Therefore, his text is a form of tribute paid to the great artist.
In Egzaminy, we see Krzysztof Kieślowski try to pass his entrance exams to the Lodz Film School, three times. Each time we learn that the examiner is always the same — Krzysztof Kieślowski himself, in his mature years. The young Kieślowski is excited about his successes, while the mature Kieślowski questions them. Eventually, the mature Kieślowski decides to end his career, as a film director, while the young Kieślowski tries to encourage him to continue pursuing it.
As a result, we see an encounter between a young man, who is looking for his place in the world, and a mature artist, who strives to take a break from that world. We become familiar with their different opinions about art, fame, the role of a director and artist, and also about love, family, metaphysics, and religion.
The play has been written by Julian Potrzebny (born in 1982), who is a screenwriter and director, and a graduate of the Directing Department at the Lodz Film School. He also participated in the Screenwriting LAB, and won screenwriting scholarships of the Polish Film Institute, as well as has been a long-time collaborator of the Dramatic Theatre of the Capital City of Warsaw. Walizki (Suitcases) — a play made for TV Theatre, in which he was the second director — won the Grand Prix at the Dwa Teatry festival in Sopot, in 2015.
The mature Krzysztof Kieślowski is portrayed by Jakub Lasota (born in 1975), a graduate of the Acting Department of the Ludwik Solski State Theatre School (branch in Wroclaw). He made his debut for Jerzy Jarocki at the Polish Theatre in Wroclaw, and from then on worked for such theatres as the Dramatic Theatre of the Capital City of Warsaw, the Polish Theatre and the Capitol Music Theatre in Wroclaw, and the Entertainment Theatre in Chorzow.
The role of the young director is played by Filip Gurłacz (born in 1990), one of the most talented actors of the young generation and a graduate of the Puppetry Department at the Białystok Puppet Theatre and the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw. So far, he has appeared in City 44 by Jan Komasa, and in Afterimage by Andrzej Wajda.
