Kristof Hoornaert was born in 1980 in West-Flanders. He studied Audiovisual Arts in Ghent and Brussels. In 2006 he started working as a freelance director on several corporate films, publicity and commercials for various companies. In 2009, his first short film Kaïn premiered in the official competition of the 59th Berlin IFF.
