Soon after the end of WWII, the French Red Cross is responsible for carrying out repatriation, and gathers their citizens in a hospital. One of the doctors who work there is young Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Laâge). One day, a nun from the convent located a few kilometers away comes to the hospital and begs to help a dying woman. It turns out that one of the nuns is about to give birth to a child... As the story develops, it becomes clear that the nuns are victims of a gang rape committed by soldiers of the Red Army. Mathilde wants to get help, but Mother Superior (Agata Kulesza) will do all in her power to keep it secret and avoid a scandal. Mathilde must face the distrust of the nuns and enter a world she does not know, where she soon becomes friends with Sister Maria Together, they will discover a terrible truth lurking behind the walls of the convent...

Anne Fontaine was born in Luxembourg, in 1959. She is an actress, director, and screenwriter. She has been featured in more than ten film and TV productions. Her directing debut came in 1993 with Les Histoires d’Amour Finissent Mal en Général (Love Affairs Usually End Badly). Nettoyage à sec (Dry cleaning, 1997) won the Golden Gazelle award for best screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival.
