Thelma (Geena Davis) is a housewife, who lives in Arkansas. She is completely dependent on her brute husband, who treats her like a servant. Her friend Louise (Susan Sarandon) works as a waitress and talks Thelma into taking a trip to the mountains for the weekend. In the wake of a tragic accident that takes place at a roadside bar, they must run from the police and travel through the South-western part of the United States. With a determined police detective (Harvey Keitel) breathing down their necks, both women encounter a charming hitch-hiker (Brad Pitt) and decide to commit other offences, while continuing their journey full of adrenaline and fun, which also becomes their personal catharsis, heedless of any consequences.
