The film is an adaptation of the classic novel Washington Square by Henry James, which tells a story of young heiress Catherine Sloper, the daughter of wealthy and distinguished doctor. Catherine is humiliated and oppressed, which makes her grown up to be a shy woman, full of complexes. It changes, when Morris Townsend, a handsome but penniless boy, starts to court her. And since the girl is to inherit a great fortune, her father believes that her admirer has obvious intentions... When Morris asks to marry his daughter, the doctor makes his move with all guns blazing.
