Thomas Newton (David Bowie) comes to Earth. His goal is to find water, which is an ingredient that is becoming scarce on his home planet. Using his supernatural powers, he soon becomes the head of an industrial empire, thus finding resources necessary to fulfil his plan. Unfortunately for him, things start to get complicated. Newton has already tasted the allure of life, wealth, and luxury on Earth, which makes him delay the mission he has to fulfil, more and more.
