The film is inspired by a short story written by Guy de Maupassant, who was a true master of the short story form. The original story in “The Devil” is about a poor man, who cannot stay with her dying mother and pays a woman from the village responsible for preparing dead people for burial to do it for him. Upon seeing that the dying mother is in fact doing quite well, the hired woman decides to scare her to death.
