Travis (Robert De Niro) is a Vietnam war veteran suffering from insomnia, who takes up a job as a taxi driver on night shifts. When cruising in the evenings around NYC, he deals will all kinds of most suspicious and dangerous individuals, which leads him to realise the amount of violence and cruelty he is surrounded with. He soon starts dating Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), who is an office worker during a political campaign, but the woman rejects him, when Travis takes her to a porn cinema. Later on, Travis meets a 12-year-old hooker (Jodie Foster), and decides that he will help her get home...
