Moonlight is a story about the growing-up of a poor black boy. He is growing up in one of the most dangerous districts in Miami and strives to find his place in the world. Drug trafficking in the neighbourhood is controlled by Juan, who becomes sort of a foster father for Chiron. Juan lives with his girlfriend Teresa in a clean and bright apartment, which becomes for the boy an oasis of stability, a place where hot food is served, beds have fresh linen, and where one can talk freely. The film also deals with another leitmotif, just as painful and complex, which is the relation between Chiron and his mother Paula. She is going a downward spiral into destructive addiction to drugs that Juan provides.
