The Other Side of Hope is a story about a resident of Helsinki, who decides to change his life and open a restaurant. One day, Wikström has an accidental encounter with a refugee from Syria, Khaled. Although the beginning of their acquaintance is rather unfortunate, both men quickly develop a profound bond that is bound to undergo a series of tough tests. Would it only be possible in a fairy-tale for their unexpected encounter to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship? In his latest film, Kaurismäki shows that he is not deaf to the echoes of the wave of xenophobia and nationalism that is rising all over the world, but at the same he manages to penetrate through the layer of sorrow offering the audience a portion of optimism that is not easy to digest, combined with contagious sense of humour.
