Camille Parker (Amy Adams), a journalist working for “St. Louis Chronicle” goes to her home town of Wind Gap to prepare material about two missing girls, one of which was recently found dead. Trying to solve the mystery, she remembers her own past to identify with the young victims. The closeness of her domineering mother Adora, stepfather Alan Crellin, and stepsister Amma brings her back to the traumatic memories from her childhood, including the ones related to the death of her younger sister, Marian. Tormented by her past and taking refuge in alcohol, the journalist joins Detective Richard Willis and Police Chief Bill Vickery, both of who are looking for clues that could shed some new light on the case of two missing girls...
