The Republic of South Africa, a Free State region, is an isolated stronghold for the ethnic minority of white Afrikaans. It is a conservative community obsessed with strength and masculinity, among whom lives Janno, a secretive and sensitive boy. One day, his mother, a devout Catholic, returns home with Pieter, an orphan living on the street, hoping to save the boy. The mother asks Janno to become like a brother to the boy who has already seen the dark side of life. Thus begins a rivalry for power, heritage, and motherly love, between the two boys.
