In the most popular of all his films, Benjamin Christensen combines a documentary with fiction and takes a closer look at the witch-hunt obsession in mediaeval times. Using illustrations from that era, he offers viewers an insight into the mediaeval mentality, and then switches to fictionalised scenes to demonstrate superstitions regarding witches, in an artistic way. We see women brewing a love potion, right before an encounter with the Devil, or when they are denouncing their companions. Finally, we see instruments of torture on the screen...
